Food & Shelter is great, but Personal Hygiene is just as important

Various factors can cause someone not to upkeep their personal hygiene. Being homeless is both mentally and physically challenging

When in this position of being homeless one may not have the motivation to upkeep their personal hygiene. They may feel discouraged and less than, feel that there is no point to look good if they are in a homeless position in life. But this is not true. Homeless people deserve to look and feel their best.

Upkeeping good hygiene such as brushing your teeth, using soap and water to wash hands to rid from germs, and proper grooming goes a long way for one’s mental and physical health. Not only is this important for individual health but for public safety as it eliminates the spread of germs. An unsheltered homeless person does not have frequent access to washrooms or soap and water to wash their hands after toilet use or eating food. With unwashed hands they will travel around and touch surfaces around the community, spreading germs.  In turn, this can lead to sickness in both the homeless individual and others.
